Andrew Murphy has had a storied career and has seen the geospatial industry evolve over several decades. He is T-Kartor's senior cartographer at the U.S. headquarters and has been an integral part of our team since 2015.
Originally from Manchester, England, Andrew spent his primary school days drawing maps and developing a passion for cartography. He moved to the United States with his family and attended Syracuse University, earning a degree in Geography.
Andrew knew then that being a cartographer was his dream job, and he still feels that way today.
Before he started with T-Kartor, Andrew held several roles related to cartography. He worked for Atlas companies, collecting data and creating maps in the era before digital tools and modern GIS programs.
In the late 90s, he trained on early GIS programs from ESRI, eventually transitioning to become a digital cartographer. From there, he worked for travel guide companies and even had a stint at Google.
Although Andrew was already highly skilled in his craft when he joined T-Kartor, he has gained skills in 3-D modeling. His transition here went smoothly, and he has enjoyed the various projects he gets to work on.
Andrew is the go-to guy when a high level of detail and artistic ability is required. You can find maps Andrew has created and collaborated on in Toronto, Cleveland, Brussels, the NYC subway system, and more; he even worked on building maps for Super Bowl LI in Houston!
Andrew enjoys the focused, collaborative culture at T-Kartor; he feels that having team members from younger generations is a plus and emphasizes the positive culture our CEO, Simon Bailey, has maintained.
Remote work was typical for Andrew even before the pandemic, and he loves his setup. Regular check-ins are essential, and he enjoys the weekly meetings to stay on the same page and connect with the team.
In addition to being the "go-to" guy for special projects, Andrew is also a resource for team members in the US and Swedish offices. With his industry expertise and open mindset, he is glad to offer advice and serve as a mentor.
Andrew recommends that anyone new to the industry focus on continuous learning, socializing with coworkers, and enjoying the ride.
Andrew has seen the industry change in countless ways over the last few decades, and he is sure the next few will follow suit. He predicts innovations in drones and AI will characterize the next decade.
When Andrew's not at work, you'll find him diving to stop soccer balls as a goalkeeper. He loves playing and watching the sport, cheering on his favorite Premier League team, Manchester City. His son, Callum, is autistic, and Andrew has organized a charity soccer match, "The Callum Cup," which has raised $120,000 over the years.
Andrew's career as a cartographer has seen him travel all over the globe. His favorite spots include Andorra, Portugal, France, and Spain (to name a few). He regularly visits family in England, and this year, he is excited to visit the Florida Keys.
