Erin Simpkins has been an integral part of the team since joining in the spring of 2022. Erin majored in environmental science at the University of Missouri (Mizzou). Her interest in geospatial began to grow during her studies; the department requires that all majors enroll in a GIS course. Erin enjoyed it so much that after completion, she pursued a GIS certificate and joined the field.
Before joining T-Kartor, Erin gained industry experience at Hexagon doing map and data production by interpreting satellite imagery, among other projects; the transition between the two organizations was seamless, as the projects Erin had worked on prior were similar.
Erin was drawn to geospatial work because she enjoys using technology as a research tool and because spatial data provides a unique perspective. She believes geospatial technologies can provide information and analysis that solve problems and improve the world.
Erin has enjoyed remote work and the balance it brings. Recently, she has been working with the QC team and learning to give feedback when reviewing other colleagues' work. She mentions how working with the QC team is one of the highlights of her day, as she looks forward to working through problems with them.
Erin speaks highly of the culture at T-Kartor; there is an emphasis on teamwork, and everyone is involved. The all-hands meetings between different teams ensure that the company as a whole is connected.
Erin doesn't feel like just another cog in the wheel but rather an essential team member who can see how her work contributes to the big picture.
In the coming years, Erin hopes geospatial technology will become more accessible to the general public. She envisions user-friendly online data, interactive online maps everywhere, and increased awareness of the geospatial field.
Continuous learning is crucial in any industry, and Erin believes this to be especially true for the geospatial industry. If you're a newcomer, she recommends that you keep learning new skills, stay informed about other projects beyond the main ones you are working on, and check in with industry updates.
Once Erin shuts her computer down for the day, you might find her spending time outside. She loves to read, go antique shopping, and take care of her cats.
Erin is currently planning an exciting trip to Utah and is specifically looking forward to hiking and exploring the Salt Lake City area.
